�Թ��� has taken a historic step in its academic expansion, seeking approval to offer doctoral degrees for the first time in the institution’s history.

The university proposed a level change to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, or SACSCOC, that would allow Bluefield to launch two programs: the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and the Doctor of Education (EdD).

If approved, the move would mark a major milestone for the private Christian university, which is currently accredited to offer associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.

�Թ��� President Steve Peterson said the proposal reflects the institution’s continued growth and its effort to meet workforce needs in the region and beyond.

“�Թ��� has always focused on preparing students to lead and serve,” Peterson said. “These proposed doctoral programs represent our commitment to expand academic influence while meeting the growing demand for highly trained professionals in our region.”

The proposal was developed over the past year by Dr. Shellie Brown, dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences; Dr. Angela Cline, dean of the Caudill School of Business; and several faculty members. Their work included curriculum development, faculty preparation, research infrastructure, and student support systems required for doctoral education.

The proposal has now been submitted to SACSCOC for review as part of the accreditation process for institutions seeking to offer doctoral degrees. University officials expect it to be considered at the commission’s June board meeting.

If the proposal is approved, �Թ��� plans to launch the programs in a future academic term.

“Expanding to the doctoral level is consistent with our strategic vision for the university,” Peterson said. “It allows us to broaden our academic portfolio while continuing to serve students who want to integrate faith, scholarship, and professional leadership.”

�Թ��� is accredited by SACSCOC to award associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
