³ΤΉΟΙη Honors Three Education Alumni with Goodness and Light Award

β€œGo out into the world and spread goodness and light” – this is the encouragement and the charge that former BU professor Dr. Donna Watson gave her education students at the end of each class. Though her tenure ended in 2017, Dr. Watson continues to be an inspiration at ³ΤΉΟΙη and in the classrooms of her former students. ³ΤΉΟΙη created the Dr. Donna Watson Goodness and Light Alumni Award in her honor and recognized the eighth round of awardees on Friday.

β€œDr. Watson believed in the potential of each one of her students and encouraged us to see our roles in education as a callingβ€”an opportunity to make a difference, to uplift others, and to change lives,” said Brandy Smith, director of BU’s Master of Arts in Counseling program. β€œShe led by example, showing us that teaching is more than a profession; it is an extension of Christ’s love. She set the standard in spreading goodness and light and encouraged students to do the same.”

The 2024 recipients of the Goodness and Light Award are Dr. Michelle Brown β€˜00, Jessica Kidd β€˜08, andEmily Cook ’12.

Jessica Kidd graduated from BU in 2008 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with teacher licensure (PreK-6). She currently teaches at Galax Middle School in Galax, Virginia.

Dr. Michelle Brown graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with teacher licensure (PreK-4 & 4-8) in 2000 andis currently a Special Education Coordinator for Tazewell County Public Schools in Tazewell County, Virginia. Dr. Brown also serves as an adjunct education instructor at ³ΤΉΟΙη.

Emily Cook graduated from BU in 2012 with a degree in English with teacher licensure. She began her career as an English teacher at Graham High School in Bluefield, Virginia before getting her endorsement in School Counseling and serving as a school counselor at GHS. Emily returned to BU as the campus counselorandis now a full-time faculty member in the School of EducationandSocial Sciences.

β€œIt is an honor and privilege to celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni,” said Dr. Shellie Brown, dean of the School of Education & Social Sciences. β€œThey are amazing educators who make a difference in the lives of their students and who positively contribute to their schools and communities every day.”

The Dr. Donna Watson Goodness and Light Alumni Award was created in 2017 by Dr. Thomas Brewster, who served as dean of the School of Education & Social Sciences at the time. Alumni are nominated by the community for displaying excellence in their schools. Recipients are named each fall and honored with a reception during Homecoming & Family Weekend.
